Honeymoon Time! This will be Kevin’s maiden voyage and it’s been 20 years since I’ve been on one. I hardly remember a thing about the family reunion cruise in 1998. We’ve been planning this trip for 4 months now, and it’s finally here!. Countless hours on Pinterest, Cruise Critic and I’ve read every excursion review know to man! Now it’s time to enjoy our 6 day cruise to the Western Caribbean with stops in Belize, Costa Maya & Cozumel.
Between Mimi, Jeff and Aubrey (a fun 20 yr old co-worker from my office) we got the kids covered.
We headed out Saturday morning to Spring to stay with my brother, Camille and Benjamin that night, so we could wake up Sunday and only be about an hour from the port in Galveston. We went to “Spring Festival” where tons of restaurants in the area had booths set up with samples. Well, we sampled ourselves into a food coma and rolled ourselves out of there. This changed our plans for dinner at Lupe’s Tortillas. We forced ourselves to go anyways, waited 30 minutes to get seated, and could barely put a bite in – too full!! We’ll have to give that a try again next visit.
We left early on Sunday to have brunch at a great Cajun place where Paula works (Kevin’s ex wife’s son’s wife (wrap your brain around that . . . ). It was delicious! Seems like this whole trip, start to finish, revolves around eating and drinking our way through vacation.

We parked our car with Discount Cruise Parking where there was a gated lot at the Exxon station about 4 miles from the Port and a van shuttled us. A porter offered to take our luggage, and we obliged (since the family in front of us did it too – we assumed they knew what they were doing . . . Turns out they were also hoping he wasn’t some con artist stealing all our stuff. Wouldn’t that be the pits?! We got on the ship just in time for the MONSOON to roll in, forcing us to hunker under the awnings of the bars, fruity cocktails in hand, and watched the lawn chairs and metal signs fly around the deck at deadly speeds. We got on our way with the Sail Away Party hosted by the best cruise director every – Matt Mitcham!
We booked a room with a window in the middle of the ship on Deck 1. Our travel agent suggested this since we were first time cruisers . It is a steadier part of the ship to minimize the chance of getting sea sick. Neither of us had a problem, phew! I think the next time we go on a cruise, we’ll splurge for the balcony. We’d enjoy sitting out there just staring at the water go by. The room offered a king bed, couch, built in desk area and, strangely enough, TWO bathrooms in our room. One with the toilet, shower and sink. And another with a tub/shower combo and sink. For just the 2 of use? Something else we thought was crazy, was the huge ROAR the toilet made when you flushed it – like it’s screaming at you! Our bed was comfortable. here’s a tip: you can request a mattress pad topper for a softer bed!
We also really enjoyed the cute little towel animals that greeted us each day after our room was cleaned. Those people have talent!!
We had lunch at the buffet that day (least favorite meal of the trip) and dinner almost every night at the MDR (main dining room) and had the best server named Monica whom we requested every night. Man, was that food good! You could pick as many main entrees (we consistently chose at least 2 for each of us -lol!), appetizers and deserts as you pleased, that way you could try everything. Lobster, steak, salmon, spaghetti carbonara, great soups and the BEST mashed potatoes. Plus a variety basket of bread – Monica knew which types were our favorites. They also had a chocolate molten cake with ice cream that was to die for! Guy’s Burger Joint was pool side and really good too – Always a long line for that. Plus there was a 24 hour pizza place that was really good too! We ate lunch at JiJi’s Asian Kitchen, which was another one of my favorite meals – a custom noodle bowl. Had some California rolls from the sushi place and some appetizers at the RedFrog brewery, where we found one of the hidden ducks –that is a THING that we read about. Are you getting a feel that this whole trip pretty much centers around FOOD, with the secondary motive being the places in the Western Caribbean?
Room service was also offered. We watched several movies and enjoyed this a couple of times.

As far as drinks go: We decided against the alcohol package ($60/day per person – would have been almost $700!) and opted for the soda package ($8/day per person), which included soda, juice and tea. Kind of pain, because you had to wait at the bar each time and they served it in an open can, so you couldn’t really keep it at the room.
The first day was “at sea” and we got to explore the ship. The lounge chairs were crowded and I wish the pools were bigger. There were water slides and a sky rail that you could pedal a suspended bike around, and a ropes course (none of which we participated in). Too busy eating – ha!
The shows were great! A Love and Marriage one that we really enjoyed, a comedian and a piano bar (that one may have been my favorite). Every time someone would come, she’d stop her song to say hi, and every time someone would leave, she’d sing “potty, potty, potty” and make them hop like a kangaroo. Super laid back, great music and an all around great entertainer.
Probably my favorite place on the ship was the Havana Deck, private to those who pay more to stay in that section, but after 7pm, it’s open to anyone. It was like a ghost town at night, so peaceful with it’s 2 hot tubs overlooking the back of the ship and my favorite drink of the trip – can’t remember the name of it, but it was like a pina colada with Midori and Blue Curacao (Twilight Sun or something?)
Our first stop was Belize. We chose a “non-Carnival excursion” which I was a little worried about, because Belize is known to be a little sketchy, and if you don’t use Carnival for your excursion, they will not hold the ship if you’re not back in time. Panic!!! I read a million reviews and booked with”Butts Up” cave tubing. Cute name, huh? We took tinder boats from our ship to the port, then managed to find the guy holding the sign for Butt’s Up.
There were several other carnival cruisers with us, and we all hopped on this unmarked bus in the back alley and prayed we were not being kidnapped. We had the best guides. “Big John” toured us through the city, talking about the real estate there, the history of Belize and made the 45 minute drive there fly by. His side kicks were Rooster and ?? (can’t remember his name) who passed around cashew wine samples and kept us entertained as well.
We arrived at Jaguar Paw Sanctuary Park where we were given our helmets and life jackets for the 30 minute hike through the rain forest to get to the river. Thank God for the dudes that carried our tubes and met us at the drop in point of the river. Side note: Next time wear water shoes that have soles thicker than a sheet paper, as the trail was made of little pointy rocks so our feet were KILLING by the end of the hike – stone bruises galore! That hike was beautiful and very interesting. Big John and his team pointed out medicinal trees, bats, cool plants, and took us though underground caverns (much like the ones we just did in San Antonio).
We hopped in our tubes, tied 8 of us together, and strapped on our super sexy helmets equipped with mounted flashlights. Rooster pulled us through the caves, sometimes swimming because it was too deep to touch, and pointed out all the cool formations. I’ll have to admit I felt so lazy just sitting there letting him haul us around. Oh well, this is vacation! The cave was beautiful – pitch black, except for the couple of places where holes allowed sunlight through – I kept forgetting it wasn’t night time! Then we had some free time to swim at the end before it was time to get back on the bus.
We stopped at a hut on the way back and were served really good homemade Belizian chicken tamales. WHOA DADDY!! Some of the hottest hot sauce I’ve eaten!! 45 minutes back to the port and made it just in time for a little bit of shopping before loading back up on the ship.
Next stop – Costa Maya. We heard this is one of the nicer ports to spend time at, so we did not plan an excursion from here. We enjoyed some frozen cocktails and had lunch at an outdoor “sports bar” type, with live entertainment – Mexican wrestling complete with spandex and masks – lol! Cute flamingos were on display and we walked through the Dolphinarium sneaking pictures when there were “NO CAMERA” signs everywhere. I would have loved to swim with the dolphins, but apparently, to get photo with the dolphins were some outrageous price and isn’t that the whole point – to go home with a picture of a dophin kissing your cheek? We did some shopping and got confronted by some mobster type asking me how much I paid for a bag from another shop that he thought one of his employees has sold to me for too discounted of a price. But I survived – and love my bag!
Some “bird people” performed a show where they flew in the air, and just as that was ending, the black clouds started rolling in. We booked it the 5 miles (maybe that’s an exaggeration) back to the ship to hurry up and stand in line to get back on the boat while the skies opened up and POURED on us. Kind of fun, but we were drenched!
Last stop – Cozumel. We wanted an excursion with some beach and relaxation time. Mr. Sanchos was sold out (recommended by several people, but may have been more of a party atmosphere than we were up to – b/c we’re old now!!). So we chose an all inclusive private island with lunch and drinks – Isla Pasion. It was about a 45 minute boat ride there and some of the prettiest blue water and tons of flying fish! We pulled up to the beach and they funneled us through a mandatory picture point where they’d hound you later to buy one – of course we did 🙂
The drinks were watered down rum punch that a server could bring you in tiny little plastic cups to your beach chairs and beer you had to get yourself from the bar. Lunch was pretty good – a fajita buffet that we ate under a hut.
Kevin did the tequila tasting and I watched (tequila makes me want to puke), but I did try a peanut butter tequila (so nasty) and some other peach flavored one that was actually pretty good. We had high expectations for a snorkeling adventure.
Prior to our trip, I bought some full faced snorkeling masks and a cool little Go Pro type camera to capture all of the awesomeness ahead. As luck would have it, we fired up the camera the night before to see how to operate it, and it was broken! Then, to top things off, Kevin tried to put in his contacts that he picked up for the trip and they were blanks – no prescription, so he was blind as a bat. Unfortunately, you can’t wear glasses with the masks because it can’t create a seal around your face. Needless to say, I headed out to the ocean with my mask. We saw one fish, a barracuda, about 25 yards out . . . Oh well, we’ll put snorkeling on our bucket list for another trip.
The last day was at sea where we had a chance to unwind and relax before we hit Galveston the next to unload. Movies, room service and poking around the rest of the ship. We packed our bags and set them outside the room late that night after more one trip down to Havanah deck.
The next morning we woke up early, had breakfast at the buffet and waited and waited and waited for our group to be called. There were some problems and it took forever. Then going through customs was another beating. The lines were SO long and we were ready to get out of there! The rest of the trip back to Dallas was uneventful – yay!
All in all a great experience. Cruises are fun, but I’m ready for our next beach trip to be something all inclusive to get some more pool and beach time in. Hmmmmm, where to?
I’ll close this out with a pic of Kevin rockin’ the pink back pack for our excursions & 2 more hair shots to make you smile. It was a battle not worth fighting – lol!
Choose Fun!!

Traffic was horrible the whole way there. It started with an accident on 35 in Dallas. Next time we’ll listen to Waze when it tries to direct us around the city via Loop 12. Then there’s the terrible traffic in Austin, but that’s always a hot mess! Made our obligatory road trip stops at Buccees and DQ for a Blizzard – good ole Texas staples 🙂
